Fort Augustus Substation

Client: Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission
Consultant: Waterman
Value: £2.59M
Completed: 2013

Fort Aug1

The project – carried out under NEC Option A conditions of contract – was for the upgrading of a live existing substation as part of the Beauly to Denny overhead line project and was located 4km off the A82 near Auchterawe. Cut/fill earthworks were carried out along with the construction of 216 no. foundations, access roads, drainage, fencing, walling, trenching and ducting. In addition, two existing bridges on the public road accessing the substation were replaced with box culverts to allow access for transformers. In order to reduce the import of material, the finished ground levels were refined.

Key Issues:
• Fill material imported from a nearby borrow pit on Forestry Commission land
• Testing of imported material resulted in a reduction of type 1 sub-base from 500mm to 250mm
