The contract was for the reconstruction of the existing carriageway to provide alternating overtaking lanes. It included earthworks, road pavement construction, drainage, extensions to the existing culverts, environmental and landscaping measures, service diversions, road markings and installation of traffic signs.
Principal Elements included: Surfacing 35,500m2 / Box Culverts 7 no. / Dry Stone Walling 2,500m / Fill 34,000T / Fencing 11,000m / Dry Aggregates 32,000T / Drainage 6,000m
Key Issues:
- Recycling of site won materials minimising on and off site haulage to reduce the carbon footprint and environmental impact of the construction project
- Procurement of local resources including materials, plant hire, human resources and sub-contractors, giving a boost to the local economy
- Continued working throughout severe winter conditions and fuel shortage during closure of Grangemouth Refinery
- Close communication with local landowners and other members of the public
- Mitigation measures for working around watercourses with evidence of otter activity
