The project comprised the enabling works for a new visitor centre at the Glentress National Forest site near Peebles and includes access junction improvements on the A72, formation of new access roads, footpaths and car parks, construction of new pedestrian and vehicular bridges, diversion of existing underground and overground services, provision of new services, installation of a new waste water treatment plant and landscaping finishes. Additional works were instructed by the Client during the works, increasing the value of the contract from £1.70M. To fit in with the Architect's vision for the site, extensive earthworks were required to re-shape the existing topography.
Principal Elements included:
Earthworks 50,000m3 / Access Roads & Parking 7,500m2
Bridges 5 no. / Drainage Pipes & Ditches 2,700m
Water Supply Pipework 500m / Electrical Supplies 1,000m
Communication Supplies 1,000m / Landscaping 35,000m2
Key Issues:
- Working within a live visitor attraction with presence of walkers and cyclists
- Site located close to private residencies and adjacent to Eshiels Burn, a tributary to the River Tweed. Work on this watercourse required work to comply with the SEPA CAR licence.
