The contract was for Balance of Plant works at Beinn an Tuirc near Campbeltown and comprised the construction of turbine foundations with roads, hardstandings, substation building and associated electrical works. Access track construction / upgrade started at the resurfaced / upgraded A83 junction with 13km of widened and altered corner sections of forest road and the construction of 9km of new roads which were predominantly constructed on a hillside. The substation building consisted of a variety of offices, welfare facilities, switchgear rooms and workshops. For the duration of the contract The Forestry Commission continued to extract timber, with an estimated 80,000T in total extracted during the contract period. This resulted in a greater requirement for co-ordination of all parties.
Principal Elements included: Concrete 4,700m3 / Substation Building 340m2 / New Track 9km / Upgraded Forestry Track 13km / Cabling 16km
Key Issues:
- Site located on one of the busiest forest routes with the Argyll and Bute area
- Due to the remote location concrete was batched on site
