The works at Nether Dallachy, Spey Bay, consist of earthworks to raise the base level, including pond infill and construction of bunds, to support the artificial lining and leachate drainage system. Due to the absence of suitable clay Bentonite Enriched Soil (BES) has been used as the geotechnical layer. The existing Phase I/Phase II landfill was restored (including installation of passive gas vents, HDPE capping membrane and landscaping soil cover). Included as part of this contract were construction works at the Kirkhill site requiring the drilling of 6 new gas and groundwater monitoring wells through inert waste and natural sand/gravel strata. The contract was carried out under ICE 6th Conditions.
Principal Elements included: Bentonite Enriched Soil (BES) 10,800m3
Key Issues:
- Lack of suitable residual clay resulting in requirement for BES
- Full Quality Assurance/Quality Control procedures developed through consultation with consultant, client and SEPA including testing of BES
- Methodology chosen to mitigate effect of weather susceptible material.
