The works comprised of the following: approximately 2.2km of new road (700m of which was constructed over land reclaimed from the River Forth); new signalised junction with the existing A876 at the western end of the works and signalisation of the existing A985/A876/A977 Roundabout in Kincardine. A new at grade roundabout west of the existing Longannet Road was constructed and landscaping and environmental mitigation works carried out. The existing Kincardine Bridge Master's Building was demolished. Also included in the scheme were cycleway/bridleway facilities along the south side of the New Eastern Link Road between the A876 and Walker Street, pedestrian facilities and improvements to the existing A985. The scheme drainage system was gravity led to a new pumping station that discharged via a rising main, thrust bored through the railway embankment, which delineated the reclaimed land. The project was the first phase of the £90M Upper Forth Crossing at Kincardine and removed 80% of traffic from the A985 in Kincardine, as well as 40% of traffic from the North Approach Road. This project was nominated for a 2005 Civil Engineering Saltire Award.

Principal Elements included: Grout - 45,000m3 / Pulverised Fuel Ash - 300,000t

Key Issues:

  • Footprint of the works injected with grout to fill voids, caused by extensive mining, adjacent to the Firth of Forth
  • Use of moisture susceptible recycled materials (pulverised fuel ash) from nearby Longannet Power Station to construct embankments
  • Poor ground conditions in reclaimed land resulted in extensive settlement control and monitoring which played a crucial part in the design and construction of embankments
  • Completed 28 weeks ahead of programme and within budget
