The design and construction of 2 no. grade separated junctions on the A90 Forfar Bypass. The two junctions involved are the Glamis and Kirriemuir junctions. At Glamis a reinforced concrete underpass with road and drainage works was constructed. Lined formwork was used to achieve the final concrete finish. At Kirriemuir a single span composite steel overbridge with a clear span of 50.4m was constructed. The concrete finish of the abutment and wing walls required patterned formwork and subsequent handchipping of green concrete to achieve the exposed concrete pattern. The steelwork for this overbridge was installed during a night-time closure of the A90. Both junctions are linked to the existing road network through new roundabouts at either side of the new interchange. In recognition of the finished quality and teamwork displayed, this project received a 2004 Saltire Civil Engineering Project Commendation.

Principal Elements included:

Earthworks 59,000m3 / Concrete 3,200m3
Bituminous Surfacing 25,000m2 / Dry Stone 3,500t

Key Issues:

  • Extensive landscaping works incorporating use of SUDS resulting in an environmentally friendly scheme which has received praise from all parties involved and in particular Scottish Natural Heritage
  • Selection and processing of cut material from Glamis to use as embankment fill at Kirriemuir resulted in optimum use of available materials and minimum requirement for imported fill
  • Minimal traffic disruption due to use of narrow lane solution at structures
