The project involved the reconstruction of 3.1km of 7.3m carriageway between the Gaelic College, Sabhal Mor Ostaig, and Armadale Ferry Terminal, on the Sleat Peninsula on the Isle of Skye; these works being the latest phase of the upgrading of the A851 between Broadford and Armadale. A large part of the works is fully designed by The Highland Council with two structures on the new road alignment being fully contractor designed.

Principal Elements included:

Rock armour  60,000t / Stone barrier wall and adjacent footpath 1,400m
Surfacing 12,000t / Contractor designed geotextile reinforced embankment 500m2

Key Issues:

  • Utilisation of site-won dressed stonework to recreate the historic and aesthetic appeal of the existing route
  • Considerable traffic management measures to allow unrestricted flow to and from nearby ferry terminal
  • Requirements of Scottish Natural Heritage being met, including otter crossing culverts.
