The re-opening of the Forth and Clyde Canal in Clydebank, as part of the award winning Millennium Link, involved the construction of three new bridges over the canal.
Structures
Dalmuir - 70m long lock of reinforced concrete base, steel sheet piled walls with capping beam (Contractors alternative design) and 8m span reinforced concrete bridge deck (4 lanes wide). 140m of reinforced concrete canal bank retaining walls.
Kilbowie Road - 10.5m span x 21m long by 6m deep in situ reinforced concrete bridge over canal founded on precast driven piles. 50m of 6.5m wide reinforced concrete canal channel.
Argyll Road - 10.5m span x 14m long by 6m deep reinforced concrete bridge over canal. 70m of 6.5m wide reinforced concrete canal channel built alongside a beached ship
Principal Elements included:
Reinforced Concrete 2,000m3 / Surfacing 7,100m2
825mm Outfall 600m / Concrete Driven Piles 400m
Tension Piles 82 no.
Key Issues:
- Dalmuir "Drop Lock" a first for British Waterways and possibly the world as a result required detailed HAZOP
- Partnership working on services negated the requirement for some major temporary diversions providing savings for the client
- Extensive traffic management was required at all times to maintain two way traffic
- NEC conditions fostered good relationships and co-operation between Employer, Contractor and Engineer
- Excellent communication required as sites were confined within town centre locations with shops and housing close by
- Consultations with SEPA with regard to the position of / flows from the lock outfall
