The works commenced in January 2008 and were located between the slipway opposite the junction of Winton Street and Montgomerie Crescent at the southern end of South Bay, and the slipway at the northern end of the existing harbour breakwater in Saltcoats. The purpose of the works was to provide a 1 in 250 year standard of protection to Saltcoats against tidal flooding. Flooding has occurred due to waves overtopping the sea walls within the harbour and at the southern end of South Bay. The contract included construction of three rock breakwaters and associated viewing areas, construction of new sea walls and toe berm, reconstruction of access steps, modification of earth banks and construction of a flood wall, replacement of promenades, upgrading of existing drainage and refurbishment of slipway.
