The works were situated at Riccarton, Crookedholm and Galston and encompassed the civil and ecological aspects of flood prevention. This project received an ‘Environmentally Sustainable Construction Commendation’ at The Saltire Awards for Civil Engineering 2005 in recognition of the level of “teamwork” shown on the project. At Riccarton, the works included 195m of steel sheet piled flood walls (upstream of Old Street Bridge); the initial 40m of the wall being stone faced and the remainder paint finished. The existing stone parapets of Old Street Bridge and Campbell Street Bridge were removed and replaced with stone faced, reinforced concrete parapets of increased height. The earthworks at Riccarton comprised the construction of two flood embankments on the south bank. At Crookedholm, two flood embankments of approximately 200m in length were constructed on each bank and a 205m long steel sheet piled flood wall constructed on the north bank. The works at Galston comprised an impounding reservoir, capable of storing 1,000 million litres of water, formed by a 2.4 km clay embankment with 1:3 side slopes and 3m wide crest.
Principal Elements included:
Sheet Piling 10,000m2 / Imported 2B Material 200,000m3
Reinforced Concrete 3,300m3 / Concrete Armouring 2,000m2
Epoxy Painting 3,000m2 / Sandstone Walling 1,000m2
Key Issues:
- Partnership working with the Client to resolve issues such as contaminated land
- Multi-site project, based in busy town centre location requiring effective interface with the public
- Relocation of otter holt at Riccarton
