The contract was for flood prevention works in and around the town of Galston, comprising of steel reinforced retaining walls, gabions, CFA (bearing piles) & sheet piling works to protect the banks and properties of the Burn Anne. Sheet piling, steel reinforced retaining walls and attenuation bunds were constructed along the banks of the River Irvine Adjacent to the A71. This contract required a high degree of sensitivity due to the close proximity of residents and businesses, coupled with the environmental issues associated with flood prevention works. Most aspects of the works required approval from SEPA with whom we built a good relationship through meetings and production of detailed method statements.
Principal Elements included:
Steel Reinforced Retaining walls –800t Steel, 2000m³ Concrete
Gabions –500m³
Attenuation bunds –85 000m³ Clay, 17 000m³ Topsoil, 2000m³ Type 1
Sheet piles –700 l/m @ Avg depth of 7.5m, CFA piles –250 l/m @ Avg depth of 6m (socketed), 600mm diameter
Key Issues:
- Protection of the river course
- Otter, Sandmartin and Kingfisher protection
- Reinstatement of the burns natural bed for fish spawning
- Working closely with SEPA
- Vibration and noise monitoring
