The contract is for the design and construction of a 12,500m2 reinforced concrete hard standing area capable of taking loads of 20t/m2 for BAE's forthcoming Aircraft Carrier Project. It involved the creation of reinforced concrete slabs, 500-950mm thick, bearing onto piles driven 35m onto bed rock. The projects major difficulty was to not disrupt BAE's ongoing T45 Destroyer construction work. This involved meticulous planning and co-ordination throughout the entire project. The upgrading of the yards High Voltage system with 2 no. new substations and gas/water/air supplies are also an integral part of the works.

Other elements are the creation of timber fenders to provide a new berthing line on the new quay, demountable safety hand rails, service trenches capable of withstanding 20t/m2 loads, ship tie-up bollards and a new drainage system incorporating 2 no. petrol interceptors.

Principal Elements included:

Piling Works -

158 no. tubular piles 660mm/1060mm dia., 1000no concrete piles, 30m sheet pile wall
