The project was for improvement works within the existing Gartnavel Hospital infrastructure. The main access road (Shelley Road) was widened to 7.3m with a new footpath and attenuation pipework (1500mm diameter) and foul pipework (225mm diameter) installed, whilst maintaining access to all existing buildings at all times. A new car park of 7800m2 was constructed on the site of demolished nurses’ flats and a new water main installed, together with upgraded drainage and footpaths. Traffic management was maintained and co-ordinated throughout by regular meetings with all concerned and weekly distribution of activity reports.
Principal Elements included:
Access Road Reconstruction 4,300m2
Footpath Reconstruction 2,500m2
Back Road Reconstruction 1,350m2
Car Park Reconstruction 7,220m2
Water Mains 1,300m
Key Issues:
- Close liaison with existing business, residents and hospital staff at all times to minimise the impact from construction works
- Maintaining access for ambulances and other hospital vehicles at all times
- Incorporation of services diversions within strict time constraints, to allow commencement of major construction project within hospital grounds.
