In 2006 the Company completed this windfarm contract in North Ayrshire, which was amongst the first in the UK to operate 3MW land based wind turbines and the largest in the UK at that time. The works comprise the construction of 3km of site access roads and 6 wind turbine foundations with associated crane hardstanding areas. The site roads were constructed using rock extracted onsite from a defined borrow pit and also by realignment of site roads to optimize rock extraction. The turbine foundations each consisted of reinforced concrete with ‘can’ inserts to position and restrain the 80m high turbine towers, which have a height to vertical blade tip of 125m. RJ McLeod were also responsible, as Main Contractor, for the design and construction of electrical substation control building, onsite power, earthing and telemetry cabling and grid connection works.
Principal Elements included:
Turbines - 6 no.
(each comprising of 35 tonnes steel and 250m3 reinforced concrete)
Site Access Roads - 3km
Cabling - 3km
Key Issues:
- Site location on hillside at approximately 300m altitude
- High degree of environmental control required due to number of watercourses traversing the site and close proximity of public drinking water reservoirs
- Site roads constructed in areas of peat depths of up to 7m.
