Project Description

Following on from the £0.20M enabling works contract completed in 2006, the Company also carried out the construction of access tracks and 16 no. reinforced concrete wind turbine bases with crane hardstanding and cable trenches between turbines, through environmentally sensitive terrain. Road alignment was limited due to the rare mountain habitat of montane heath. Culverts, small bridges, crane hardstandings and cable trenching are also included in the scope. On-site borrow pits were utilised to win general rockfill and processing of this was carried out on site to produce other materials. The construction of a sub-station was also included in the contract.

The extension was completed over an 18-week period in 2008 and consisted of the construction of 2.5km of access tracks and 4 no. reinforced concrete wind turbine bases with crane hardstanding and cable trenches between turbines.

Principal Elements

RC wind turbine bases: 16 no. + 4 no. (320m3 each)
Upgraded track: 2km
New track: 9km + 2.5km

Key Issues

  • Turbines sited at elevations of between 650m and 700m making this the highest windfarm in Great Britain
  • All concrete produced by an on-site batcher and delivered to the bases by a fleet of mixer trucks
  • Works carried out within a working sporting estate and farm
  • Careful control of site operations and blasting due to presence of otters, golden plover and black grouse
  • Water quality monitored by ecological consultant
