The Company carried out the civil and ancillary works for this, the first windfarm project to be constructed in Aberdeenshire (7.5kn east of Huntly). The works comprise of the construction of 8km of site access road, 20 wind turbine foundations with associated crane hard-standing areas and sub-station control building. Each foundation consists of 140m3 of reinforced concrete, they extend to a depth of 2.6m and involve accurate setting of the holding down bolts that fix the 3.9m diameter wind turbine tower. The 26MW windfarm will supply enough pollution-free electricity to meet the annual needs of over 13,000 homes and will displace nearly 60,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide –the main greenhouse gas –every year. The turbines are 1.3MW models with a total height (to the blade tip) of 78 metres.
Principal Elements included:
2,700m3 Concrete
350 tonnes Reinforcement
20,000m3 Rock
Key Issues:
- All earthworks, rock extraction and reinstatement executed in accordance with stringent planning requirements
- The farm on which the works are located remains working throughout the duration of the contract
- Working with the environmental constraint of badgers on site.
